About Savarkundla

Savarkundla is a municipality and city in the Amreli District of Gujarat. Savarkundla is a union of two cities “Savar” and “Kundla” and hence it is also known as the twin city. There is also a tehsil named Savar Kundla, located in the Amreli District. This Tehsil encompasses 84 villages – Gadhakda, Vanda, Badhada, Nesadi, Vanshiyali, Likhala, Nana Zinzuda, Oliya, Ramgadh, Vijyanagar, Khadsali, Gordka, Luvara, Jikiyali, Vijpadi, Juna Savar, Navagam, Bhenkara, Mota Zinzuda, Kanatalav, Bhokarva, Amrutvel, Juna Savar, Bhuva, Charkhadiya, Dhajdi etc. are just to name a few. 

Geography of Savarkundla

Savarkundla is positioned at 21.337 degrees in the North and 71.310 degrees in the East. The city is located on the plateau of Southern Saurashtra. It is mainly a hilly land area. The ground water consists of high levels of phosphate, sodium and dissolved solids. The bore-well water is quite hot. During the monsoon time the River Navli flows from the South towards the North.

As per the census of the year 2011, the population of Savarkundla was 78354. The female and male population percentages are 48 percent and 52 percent respectively. About 11 percent of the total population of Savarkundla belongs to the age group of less than 6 years.

The Lohar(Blacksmith) is the major community of the city. The reason is abundance of iron industries in Savarkundla such as tools and weighing scales manufacturing. Apart from Lohars there are a few other communities as well who dwell here. Hindi and Gujarati are the official languages of the city.

Economy of Savarkundla

The city is well-known for the manufacturing of weighing scales. About 1/3rd of the total population of Savarkundla is linked to the iron industry. The city boasts of being the one and only producer of mechanical weighing scales in the entire India. Nowadays this place is developing as the main hub for the manufacture of electronic weighing scales.   

Savarkundla is also boasts of a very booming agriculture. The city is well-known for the production of vegetables and Jamfal (or Guava). Groundnut and cotton are the major crops. In the year 2009, the Amreli Power Project Limited developed a “Bio-Waste” Power project in the area.

Culture of Suvarkundla

The herbal fireworks are quite popular in Suvarkundla. During the “festival of lights-Diwali”, a plethora of people from Kundla as well as Suvar congregate near the riverfront at night to light the herbal firecrackers. These crackers are handmade and are popular as “Ingoriya”. These Ingoriyas are made by filling the Ingoriya tree fruits with explosives. There is a tradition here which is followed by both the native groups (Suvar and Kundla) to have a fight by throwing the crackers towards each other.     

Tourism in Savarkundla

The city houses a renowned building called “Darbargarh” and according to the locals it was built by Jogidas Khuman who hailed from the Ambardi Village located in the vicinity of Savarkundla. The other places of attractions within the city are:

Transport in Savarkundla

The Savarkundla Railway Station is the major rail head of the city which belongs to the Western Railway, Terminus Bhavnagar. There are 2 express trains that stop at the Savarkundla station. The nearest airport to the city is the Diu Airport which is about 92 kms from Savarkundla. Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Surat are the major cities that are located near Savarkundla and can be reached easily via excellent rail network.
